Back to school

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

Over the past few weeks I’ve finished up my internship, gone to North Carolina for vacation, gotten an impacted second molar removed, and moved back to school. The new place is really nice, and I really like living with BJ, Matt, and Tony.

Free time has been occupied with reading the Harry Potter books, a most enjoyable endeavour.

See my Fall 2005 Schedule or the Course page on the right for some basic info on what I’ll be doing for this semester. I’ll also be working on my thesis, doing some part-time work, and presiding over the Penn State Mac User’s Group.

Bad game idea

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

There’s some relationship between the game rock, paper, scissors and the United States government. An arbitrary re-write of the game’s rules might be as follows:

Congress beats the Supreme Court.
Supreme Courts beats the President.
The President beats Congress.

All I have to do now is come up with hand signals, and I may have myself a winner.

The pitch

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

I had a dream last night that the pitching wedge I bought off eBay came in the mail, but when I opened the box, inside was just a book about how to use a pitching wedge! Oh no!

UPDATE: My “pitching wedge” finally came, and it is in fact a 4 iron. This is in many ways worse than it being a book about how to use a pitching wedge.

Computer trespass

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

When I was reading this article about students at Kutztown facing felony charges for bypassing security on school-owned computers, I was reminded of that time Scott Weiner got in trouble for making Web sites that made fun of teachers at Holland Middle School (née Junior High). Yeah, it’s not exactly the same thing, but it made me think back on pleasant memories.

Soda

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

I love Fresca. I’ve never really thought of it as “grapefruit-flavored soda,” but I guess that’s what it really is. That’s a little gross, but I’ll deal.

What’s left

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Today I’ll be working on refining my final presentation. I’ll also be trying out a new last-minute contender for the project management crown. Tomorrow I’ll be meeting with one of the webmasters at the Lab to tackle gForge, hopefully for the last time. Wednesday I have an exit interviews and some evaulations to fill out, then the presentation. Thursday will be largely filled out with an elaborate “termination clearance” process, requiring me to visit such exotic locales as the COSMEC Custodian, Materials and Instrumentation, Special Security, Drafting Records, Tool Crib, Distribution Office, and the EH&S office. I’ve never interacted with anybody from any of those places, but I still have to go and have them sign off on papers saying I don’t have any of their property or other obligations.

Becky’s flying up tomorrow. We’ll be poking around town for a few days, then driving back home Friday morning probably. After that it’s right off to North Carolina.

Whatever happened to…

Neil Armstrong? I never hear anything about the first human being to walk on the Moon. Shouldn’t he be more famous?

Shenanigans

Via Fark: Super Maul. I’m heading to Staples today…

Boston dialect

Friday, August 5th, 2005

Yeah, picking on the Boston accent is easy. Fact is, though, that I adore it. Here are my three favorite examples gleaned from 10 weeks in the city.

Cashier

“That cake you’re buying is wicked sweet.”

Woman in store

“I’m in Tahget.”

Man at work

“I just installed After Dahk.”

You can’t make up stuff this good.
