Human/Computer Interface Design (IE 418)

Design and evaluation of the human/computer interface, including human performance, visual displays, software design, and automated system monitoring.
My thoughts: In a lot of ways the material in this course was a rehash of things that I learned in IST 331, but there was one part that was particularly valuable: We learned how to use Javascript to record and get timings of user actions, so that we can optimize our designs for user performance. My thoughts: Another semester, another section of colloquium. What made this time around so interesting was the way in which the speakers Dr. Mitra brought in almost always mentioned something that related to my thesis work and gave me a new way of thinking about the problem. We didn’t have any formal papers due for the class, so I can’t use this space to show you something that came directly out of it, but my thesis certainly contains ideas that were influenced by my time in colloquium.

Basic Downhill Skiing (KINES 011)

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding and basic level of proficiency in Downhill Skiing.
My thoughts: This class was a great introduction to the fundamentals of skiing. We had six 2.5 hour-long sessions at Tussey Mountain where we learned such techniques as the proper way to turn and to stop. What made the class great was its small group focus; I was one of only eight students sharing the instructor.
